De film richt zich op de periode waarin Van Gogh woonachtig was in het Franse dorpje Auvers-sur-Oise gedurende de laatste maanden van zijn leven. Hij schilderde er nog een aantal werken en ontwikkelde zijn kleurrijke manier van schilderen. Centraal staat zijn relatie met zijn schilderijen en zijn worsteling met het geloof, met zijn psychische stoornis en met zijn ontwrichtende vriendschap met kunstenaar Paul Gauguin.
